On October 17 to 21, the First Regional Youth Forum was held on the sidelines of the Third Asian and Pacific Energy Forum (APEF3) as part of the Asia-Pacific Energy Week in Bangkok. This event was dedicated to one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals – SDG 7 ("Ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all").
The Forum was held with the support from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation. The ROSATOM Corporate Academy co-organized the first ever youth event dedicated to the energy issues of the ESCAP member countries.
A special role in the work of the Forum was given to the youth. It was attended by young power engineers, environmentalists and employees of industry companies from 17 countries of the Asia-Pacific region. They identified the role of the youth in the development of roadmaps to achieve SDG 7 in the region and proposed to work with the ESCAP secretariat on the idea of creating an Asia-Pacific Youth Expert Committee on Energy. It is intended to provide a platform for dialogue and joint work between the Commission experts and young professionals from the Asia-Pacific region.
Who presented the idea?
The idea of young professionals was presented by Amira Bilqis, co-founder of the Youth for Energy in Southeast Asia community and lecturer of the Sustainable Leadership and Impact Management course developed jointly with Y20 and the ROSATOM Corporate Academy. It is expected that the first meeting of the committee will be held in Laos as part of the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024.
