About city
The fifth largest city in Russia, with a population of over 1.2 million, Nizhny Novgorod stands at the confluence of two rivers, the Volga and Oka. It is one of the country’s major administrative, economic and cultural centers. Besides, it is Russia’s largest industrial center, with sprawling mechanical engineering, metalworking, and automotive plants. In years 1959 to 1991, Nizhny Novgorod was a “forbidden” city for foreigners because of all the armament factories located there. These days, though, it is one of the country’s richest cultural centers, a genuine hub of river cruise tourism, and home to many major international fairs and exhibitions.
The Novgorod Kremlin
The Novgorod Kremlin
Built upon remnants of earlier buildings, the 13 towers and 12m high walls of Nizhny Novgorod’s magnificent Kremlin date back to the early XVI century. Today, the Kremlin mostly houses government offices, though the city's two most important museums are there as well. Amazing riverside views are best enjoyed from the fortress wall and the 41-meter tall sentry tower, open from May to November. Another picturesque perspective on the city opens from the nearby cable car ride whose 3660-meter long gondola lift connects Nizhny with the town of Bor, stretching some 900 meters across the Volga River.
The Mayak Academy
The Mayak Academy
The host venue for the 2022 Global Impact Conference, the A.D. Sakharov Mayak Academy is the result of a unique initiative carried out by Rosatom together with the Nizhniy Novgorod administration. The historical early-XIX-century bank building overlooking the Volga River has been thoroughly renovated into a cutting-edge culture and education center with classrooms, a conference hall, meeting rooms, an exhibition space, a restaurant, and a video production studio. Along with being a corporate training center for Rosatom, the place is becoming a true cultural powerhouse, a hot spot for enthusiastic engineers, entrepreneurs, IT experts, and scientists in search of new ideas and discoveries.
The Packhouses
The Packhouses
Initially built for the 1892 All-Russian Industrial Exhibition, these elegant wrought-iron structures spent more than a century hidden from sight, underpinning the brick walls of two rather shabby-looking warehouse barns in Nizhniy Novgorod Siberian Harbor. In 2015, architecture enthusiasts discovered that the original metalwork had preserved, and in 2020, restoration works were performed to take the metal structures out in the open and clean them of century-old layers of dust and paint. The new pavilions were then finished with polished stainless-steel panels, and now the rearranged facility houses a 426-seat concert hall and an art gallery with a panoramic glass wall overlooking the river and downtown Nizhniy Novgorod.
Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka (The Nizhniy Novgorod Fair)
Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka (The Nizhniy Novgorod Fair)
Yarmarka means “fair” in Russian, and this historic former fairground, once home to the largest fair in the Russian Empire, was restored in 1991, now as a superb modern exhibition center. Hosting international events, fairs, and conventions, the city’s Yarmarka is a buzzing center of business and culture and also one of the city’s most impressive sights.
Upper Volga Embankment
Upper Volga Embankment
Verkhnevolzhskaya Naberezhnaya (the Upper Volga Embankment) is one of the city’s most picturesque promenades, full of monuments, beautiful views of the Volga River, and scenic streets lined with historic merchant houses.
Charmed by the Volga landscapes during his visit to Nizhny Novgorod in 1834, Emperor Nicholas I ordered the area to be built up and beautified. Transformation of Upper Volga Embankment began shortly thereafter, beginning with a spacious boulevard and a city park called Alexander Garden. Streets along the embankment were then paved with cobblestones and lined with picket fences and new stone houses. The street’s historical appearance has been maintained till today, so it still invites visitors to relax amid its historical houses and river views.
Ferris wheel on Sennaya Square
Ferris wheel on Sennaya Square
The 50-meter high Ferris wheel on the Volga riverbank Opened in 2021 to mark the 800th anniversary of the city. Its 18 climate-controlled cabins offer amazing views of Nizhniy Novgorod’s historical and modern parts, the Pechersky Monastery, and the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The Faithful Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral was built in 1856 especially for the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, as the Saviour Cathedral in the shopping mall of Kunavinskaya Sloboda couldn’t accommodate all the worshippers coming to the Fair.
The 5-domed, tent-shaped, stone cathedral is one of the largest Christian churches in Russia. Its height amounts to 87 metres. The Cathedral Bell hanging in its bell tower weighs 60 tons, making it the third largest church bell in Russia.
The Nizhniy Novgorod State Art Museum
The Nizhniy Novgorod State Art Museum
Founded in the late XIX century (1986, to be precise), when Nizhniy Novgorod enjoyed the status of Russia’s third most important city, right after Moscow and the then-capital city St. Petersburg, the Nizhniy Novgorod State Art Museum is one of the oldest and biggest art museums in the country. Currently housed in two historical buildings, the Governor's palace in the Kremlin and the Sirotkin house overlooking the Volga, it boasts a collection of over 12,000 items, a truly magnificent and comprehensive display of all the stages and trends in the history of Russian painting. The museum's collection of Western European art represents all major European art developments from the 15th to the 19th century. There are several real gems among them, such as Lucretia by Lukas Cranach the Elder (1535), The Piazza Navona in Rome by Bernardo Belotto (1767-1770), and Giuseppe Maria Crespi’s Young Man with a Lute (1710-15).
The Arsenal Museum
The Arsenal Museum
Located in the lovingly restored 1843 Arsenal Building, one of the biggest structures of the Nizhniy Novgorod Kremlin, the Arsenal Museum is a subsidiary of the world-known Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. Visitors, therefore, get a chance to see some of the finest exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, and arts ever to be found outside of Russia’s capital city.
Apart from classical art collections, the Arsenal develops a new creative environment, making the most of the unique identity of its territory, showcasing today’s arts trends and integrating classical art into a highly relevant context.
The Nizhniy Novgorod State Academic Drama Theater
The Nizhniy Novgorod State Academic Drama Theater
The first play, the comedy The Choice of a Tutor by Denis Fonvizin, was performed in the Nizhniy Novgorod Drama Theater back in 1798, making it is one of the oldest theatres in Russia. Since 1896, the theater resides in one of the most beautiful buildings on the main street of the city, designed by V.A. Schroter, the chief architect of Imperial theaters. The theatre’s repertoire includes productions of Russian and Western European classical plays.
