Interactive Workshop: “Nuclear Outreach: Understanding the Younger Generation” with IAEA
25 June 2024 (Tuesday)
16:00-19:00, outdoor

An eventual dream of professionals and scientists in the nuclear sector is to successfully pass on the human-centric mission of nuclear energy to the next generation.

In March of 2024, IAEA began to develop a document titled “Introducing nuclear science and technology to the younger generation: general approach and case studies”. This document is meant to guide the industry in their work with the younger generation, particularly engineers and scientists. At the workshop IAEA representatives, a group of technical experts and youth participants will exchange their visions for nuclear outreach and the most efficient practices for promoting the nuclear industry.

As a result of the collaboration the document will comprise key practices of nuclear organizations, prioritizing the role of education, partnership and community. This workshop is the first open outreach to the next generation in order to help guide experts in writing the document. The expert team will collect the insights of the participating youths and work towards writing the document with a multigenerational perspective on nuclear development in mind.

Panel Session: “Nuclear Outreach: Communicating the Nuclear Message and Dispelling the Myths”
26 June 2024 (Wednesday)
10:00-11:30, Leipunsky Hall

Nuclear science and technology play pivotal roles in shaping the future of our world, influencing diverse sectors ranging from energy production and healthcare to environmental protection.

As we stand at the crossroads of technological advancement and societal progress, it becomes imperative to examine and address current gaps in understanding and awareness of nuclear science among the younger generation. Despite its significance, nuclear science is often perceived as complex and intimidating. The lack of accessible educational resources and engaging learning opportunities has led to a noticeable gap in the understanding of nuclear concepts among students. Failure to address this gap may hinder our ability to harness the full potential of nuclear technology to the betterment of society.

This session brings together famous nuclear communicators, experts and creators who will dispel the myths about nuclear which they have faced with in the course of their careers. The audience will decide if the experts managed to explain the myths and demystify nuclear energy. What negative myths about nuclear technology have you encountered, and which of them should be debunked first?

Plenary Session “InsPowered by Atoms: Our Dream for the Next 70 Years”
26 June 2024 (Wednesday)
12:00-13:45, Sakharov Hall

70 years ago the world witnessed how a multigenerational dream came true: the power of nuclear energy was harnessed to serve mankind.

The dream turned into a reality as an international spotlight was placed on the Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant. It instantly became an inspiration for the world’s leaders, professionals, and scientists who recognized that the field of energy production was changed forever. Inspired by the power and potential of the atom, nuclear scientists and engineers were both dreamers and doers, and defined one of the key milestones in world history. Ever since the first power plant opened, there have been peaks and valleys in the progress of the world’s nuclear power community. However the dream-driven industry has managed to break through and eventually secure a “green light” for further development.

The participants of this session will try to answer a few important questions that determine the future not only of the nuclear industry, but also perhaps the whole of humanity: What is the next dream for the global nuclear industry? What is the dream for different nuclear stakeholders? What steps must be taken to transition from being dreamers to doers?

Plenary Session “Sustainable Skills for Just Energy Transition and Clean Energy Technologies”
26 June 2024 (Wednesday)
15:00-16:15, Sakharov Hall

A dream for millions of people around the world is access to engineering education, as this on the one hand offers an opportunity to rise socially and on the other hand creates a chance to develop something innovative and important that could have an influence on the whole of mankind.

This especially applies to a nuclear education, which determines the technological “elite” in a number of countries. With the rapid rate at which the energy landscape is developing, the skills needed to work in the field are also undergoing fundamental transformations. On the one hand, the profile of work in the energy sector has become increasingly more complex, with a wider adoption of clean energy technology and digitalization. On the other hand, the rapid change in the field has accelerated the rate of structural unemployment in traditional production, which has put a spotlight on the social aspects of the industry.

This has opened up discussions around measures that could be taken to ensure social justice in the energy sector. How do we ensure a sustainable and just energy transition from the skills development perspective? How can we match the demand for skills in the clean and carbon intensive energy sectors? The session participants will be looking for answers to these and other related questions.

Visionary session: “From Fundamental Knowledge to Results, from Atom to Gene”
26 June 2024 (Wednesday)
16:15-17:30, Sakharov Hall

The modern nuclear industry is a dream come true for many people: the embodiment of their knowledge and talents in such a unique sphere.

The industry has become the result of the combined efforts of scientists and engineers and has allowed for the implementation of many unique solutions for the betterment of people’s lives. Despite the fact that many young people still associate nuclear power mostly with power plants and the generation of electricity, the industry has expanded to providing solutions to some of the most difficult medical, logistical, agricultural, and transportational problems. Quantum computing “inspired” by atomic physics, unique radiopharmaceuticals and nature-mimicking technologies are just a few of the innovative developments brought to us by the nuclear industry.

This session will dive into the new applications of nuclear physics along with innovative energy technologies which you are likely unfamiliar with. What awaits us tomorrow in terms of the nuclear industry? What new ideas or fields of development are already on the horizon and what are expected “beyond the horizon”? What will the industry look like 20, 30, 50 years from now? Let us reflect on this along with our speakers.

Closing plenary session “Dreamers and Doers: Young People's Pledge for a Better Future”
26 June 2024 (Wednesday)
17:30-18:45, Sakharov Hall

As the outstanding physicist Pierre Curie, one of the first researchers of the phenomenon of radioactivity, noted, “you need to create a dream from life, and from a dream - reality.”

The ability to dream and create is the most important quality of technology leaders, the nature of which has not yet been fully revealed. Many factors play an important role in the development of personality, including the environment in which a person develops, the education received, the motivation that society gives, but also what we are accustomed to consider as not entirely serious factors - hobbies and interests, friendly communication , leisure, favorite books and films, animals and travel. Everything that is often hidden from outside attention, but at the same time, often forms a system of values and priorities for the activities of a talented person.

That is why creating a comfortable environment for the training and development of technology leaders is a task not only for the academic community and professionals in the field of social engineering, it is a task for each of us, because only through joint efforts can we better understand and help talented people create an environment that will become their comfort zone, will help to reveal their potential and best human qualities.

To do this, we want to turn to the personal experience of each of the participants in our session - their dreams, life stories, vivid memories that can convey those key moments of personal growth that had a decisive influence on their path in the profession. We will try to implement this task in the first part of our session.

In the second part, we will unite the efforts of the youth part of the professional community represented at the forum in order to form a common declaration reflecting our values and meanings - the values of development and dreams. Dreams of a happy, equal future for all, which will soon become a reality thanks to our common efforts.
